I probably gush about the girl’s relationship too often, but I just can’t get over how amazing it is. I have a sister that is 13 months younger than I am and I go to her for anything and everything. I know how it feels to have that special bond with someone, but I’ve never known just how magical it is to watch from the outside looking in.

Last week I walked into the girl’s room shortly after waking up to find this.

Avery climbed up into bed with Harlan to watch a video together on the iPad. I didn’t let them know that I was watching and stood there peeking in. Harlan set up pillows for Avery to sit up just like she was. She told Avery about the videos and characters that they were watching. She did everything she could to get her little sister involved.

Harlan is a natural big sister. She’s been this way since she saw the very first ultrasound with me at my doctor’s appointment. She’s always looking out for Avery and is a lot more responsible with her than she should be at this age. I call her my mini mommy.

Avery loves having Harlan to look up to. She gets upset when she’s not around and screams her name down the street when she gets too far from us on her scooter. When it’s time to go to pick up Harlan from school, Avery runs to the stroller yelling Harlan. Their reunions with one another (after only a couple of hours) are like they haven’t seen each other in years.

As their mother, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Sure there will be many times growing up when they get in arguments and don’t get along. It’s a natural thing for siblings to do. I expect it and am prepared for it (hopefully.)

What I didn’t expect was just how fast these two would love each other. I mean really love each other. It’s so hard for me to describe the feeling that I get when I think about their  relationship. My heart swells and tears build in my eyes thinking about the two of them together.

It’s love.

Their love.

Sister love.

This is so special. I’ve never wanted a sister but LOVED every minute of growing up with my brothers. My oldest was definitely my protector and my middle brother was my “blankie”. Love that Harlan is such a natural Big Sis

I can so relate to how you feel! Except my sister is 6 years older than me, we didn’t really connect until we were older. But I LOVE seeing my 4.5 year old daughter ‘take care’ of her 18 month old brother. She’s part mini mommy and part bully with him though, sometimes I have to break up fights. But overall, she is so sweet with him and he adores her to pieces! When she isn’t around and goes to grandma’s he doesn’t know what to do with himself 🙂

How sweet! My kids have a very strong sibling bond as well. I love capturing those moments when they think I’m not looking and I catch Moo reading her brother a book or something. Heart melting indeed!
